Passion Fruit
Passion fruit, with its aromatic fragrance and complex flavor profile, stands out as a mixologist’s dream ingredient.
What is passion fruit?
Passion fruit is a tropical fruit known for its distinctive flavor, which is a sweet-tart mix with a floral aroma that many find irresistible. You may have heard of its other name – “Maracuya”, but there are different colors and varieties of the fruit Worldwide.
It belongs to the Passiflora genus, a type of flowering vine, with the most commonly consumed species being Passiflora edulis.
The fruit itself is round to oval, with a tough outer rind that can be purple or yellow when ripe. Inside, it contains a cavity filled with seed-covered pulp, which is the part that’s eaten or used in recipes.
Passion fruit has a tangy and tropical flavor that and thanks to store-bought products like frozen or canned purees and syrups, is accessible for many cocktails, non-alcoholic drinks, smoothies and even baking and pastry.
How to make Passion Fruit Cocktail?
While I call this drink “Passion Fruit Cocktail”, it really is a martini.
Made with ice, vodka, passion fruit juice, simple syrup (optional) and lime juice, is comes together is 2 minutes and has a refreshing, catchy and balanced taste.
Drinks with passion fruit have gained a lot of popularity lately. It is a trendy fruit for cocktails.
Use it in sparkling wine drinks, non-alcoholic cocktails (mocktails) or spritzers. You can not go wrong with it.
It pairs great with a lot of spirits, from the smoothness of vodka to the rich complexity of rum, creating drinks that are as sophisticated as they are delightful.
This passion fruit martini is the easiest drink you could possibly make.
Here is what you need:
Ingredients:
- ice
- vodka (unflavored is fine, but you could experiment with vanilla or passion fruit vodka)
- lime juice (optional, be careful with it, since the passion fruit already adds enough tartness)
- simple syrup – to balance the taste and to add sweetness
- passion fruit juice or nectar – I used store bought juice from a box
Instructions:
- Add ice, vodka, lime juice, simple (or Maple) syrup and Passion Fruit juice to a shaker.
- Shake 10 times.
- Strain into glasses.
- Add lime wedge, 1/2 of Passion Fruit or mint leaves for garnishing (optional).
Recipe Tips:
The beauty of passion fruit is in its ability to inspire creativity, which is always fun!
Here are a few tips for those looking to explore:
- Experiment with Spirits: Instead of vodka, think about how passion fruit’s flavor pairs with other spirits. A passion fruit rum punch or a bourbon passion fruit smash could offer delightful surprises.
- Textures: Incorporate passion fruit seeds into your drinks for a crunchy texture, or use passion fruit syrup for a sweeter, smoother cocktail. You could try making Passion Fruit Syrup by combining Passion Fruit Juice and sugar and heating to achieve thicker consistency and sweeter flavor.
- Balance of the flavors with Bitters: A dash of bitters can add depth to the tropical sweetness of passion fruit, creating cocktails with a more complex flavor profile.
- Bullbes – top off with some sparkling water for a lighter, frizzy drink.
