Quick Homemade Peanut Butter

Why make peanut butter at home, when you can buy it from any grocery store?

Because it is fun and easy to make and you can even save some money.

Just two cups of roasted salted peanuts are needed to make about 8 ounces of creamy peanut butter. This way you also know what exactly goes inside it and that there are no unhealthy ingredients or preservatives.

What ingredients do you need

  • Roasted, salted and peeled peanuts – dry roasted or regular
  • Vegetable oil (optional) – this ingredients it only optional, but I add some oil all the time. Depending on the oil content of the peanuts used, you may not be able to have them blend into smooth and creamy mixture without adding some oil. Spanish peanuts (peeled) are best for this recipe, because of their high oil content.
  • Salt (optional)
  • Sweetener ( sugar, erythritol, honey or maple syrup, optional)

Best peanuts for making peanut butter at home?

You can basically make peanut butter at home with any peanuts you have on hand.

Keep in mind that some peanuts have higher oil content than others and the peanut butter can turn creamier and more oily, if using these types.

Dry roasted vs regular peanuts? Both kinds work, but you may need to add some oil to the peanut butter during the blending process, if using dry roasted peanuts.

U.S. peanuts fall into four basic types: Runner, Virginia, Spanish and Valencia.

All 4 types can be used for homemade peanut butter, but keep in mind that Spanish type are the most oily.

How to make peanut butter at home?

Place peanuts in a food processor.

Turn on and run for 5 (it may take a few additional minutes) minutes on medium speed.

The peanuts will turn into crumbs, then form a ball and after that turn into liquid peanut butter. Add the optional ingredients and process for another minute.

What to use for?

This peanut butter can be used for sandwiches, toast, crepes, pancakes, salad dressings, sauces, cookies, smoothies, cake layer or fillings, to make homemade peanut butter cups, cupcakes, muffins and much more. My dog loves the moment I open a jar of peanut butter and rushed to come and lick a spoon with some peanut butter on it.

How to store

Store in an airtight container in the fridge or at room temperature for up to 3 weeks. I prefer storing it in the refrigerator.

Tips and questions:

  • My peanut butter is not turning creamy, why?  This is a very common issue. Even I had doubts, of I’m doing things the right way the first time I attempted to make it. During the stage where the peanuts get to a paste like consistency, you do need to continue blending. But not to the point where you may break your food processor. Use your own judgement and decide if you need to add in some vegetable oil, to thin the mixture and help the peanuts continue blending to a runnier consistency. I sometimes have to add up to 1-2 tablespoons of oils, depending on the dryness and type of peanuts used.
  • Allergic to peanuts, can I use different nuts and the same method? I have not tried this method with many different kinds of nuts (hazelnuts, cashews, pistachios, walnuts, almonds), but just hazelnuts. Most nuts will work, using this method. Depending on the dryness and texture of them, you may need to add some oil (vegetable) to make sure they blend well and the final result gets creamy. If you are attempting to make homemade “Nutella” with hazelnuts, make sure you pulse the nuts long enough so they become creamy. Only then proceed to adding the sweetener and cocoa powder.
  • What can I add to this peanut butter?  While this peanut butter tastes great as it is, there are several ingredients you can add to enhance the taste/flavor. Add ingredients like honey, cinnamon, raisins, chocolate chips to this peanut butter.
