Bison Burgers With Blue Cheese
Hi guys! Is everyone having a good week? I just can’t believe it is Wednesday already!
Have you ever tried bison meat? Do you like it?
I’ve tried it many times in restaurants and I’m in love with bison steaks and burgers. I recently decided to make some bison burgers at home. Bison meat is leaner than beef, but if it’s not cooked properly it can get very dry. It is best served medium rare. To be completely honest, I can not always distinguish if I’m eating a good quality beef burger or a bison one.
I like to season the meat with salt, pepper, garlic powder and add some chopped onions for extra juiciness.

Then I formed the patties by hand.
Bison Burgers With Blue Cheese
Uncooked burger patties can be wrapped in parchment paper and kept in the fridge for 1-2 days or frozen for up to 2 months.
I just used regular burger buns, but gluten free buns will be a great substitute. You can also check m recipe for Sesame Burger Buns, which have an amazing texture and flavor.
I topped my burger with some blue cheese crumbles and caramelized onions. Each bite from this burger has a different flavor, because of all the wonderful toppings. I also like garnishing with mixed greens, instead of plain lettuce and add some tomato slices. You can add your favorite toppings, used american or feta cheese for example. Bacon will make a great topping and if you have the time to grill or roast some peppers, they will make an amazing burger top pins as well.
I kind of like the combination of burger+fries+coke… Well I skipped the coke, but made my favorite homemade french fries, to accompany this fabulous bison burger.
It has been a while since last time I made burgers at home. Excuse my messy pictures and the absence of a vertical “Pinterest” shot, but I honestly was not planning on sharing this recipe. It was delicious! It takes less than 30 minutes to make. I’ll make it again, for sure!
This is a typical grilling season recipe, but I use my gas grill throughout the year.

Oh my, I can’t say I’ve ever tried a bison burger, but I’m open to it. Yours look absolutely delicious with that blue cheese and fries that you actually made. Wow, look so yummy. My husband is a big hunter, I know, not everybody’s cup of tea, but he loves the natural meats and eating new stuff. He would love these! I should definitely give them a whirl. Happy Wednesday =)
Thanks Laura, I hope you like these! Happy Wednesday!
I’ve actually never tried bison meat before, though I’ve always wanted to! This burger looks amazing, Mira! I love the addition of caramelized onions and crumbled blue cheese. This is definitely a meal that I could really sink my teeth into! 🙂 Pinned!
Thanks for the pin Gayle!
I have never tried bison but really want to, I hear good things about it. This looks like my kind of burger, you’ve inspired me.
Thanks so much Janette!
Now this is what I call a burger! I’ve never tried a bison burger before but I am seriously drooling over all those caramelized onions and blue cheese crumbles! I can imagine how flavorful this is – definitely a burger lover’s dream! Wow!

Yum – I adore the use of bison in there! You never cease to amaze me with your seriously creative (and delicious!) ideas!
Thanks Alessandra!
Bison burger! I’ve never made my own burgers or tried bison, but this recipe have convinced me to try. Also those caramelized onions! Yum.
Hey Sarah, these actually are pretty easy to make 🙂
I am so thrilled that you posted this! I much prefer bison burgers over beef burgers! To me, most beef burgers are too fatty – I really enjoy the leaner taste to game meats! I always recommend them to any one who has never tried one, and they’re always pleasantly surprised! Love the blue cheese crumbles on it as well – yum!
Thanks Kathleen! I wish bison meat was available at every store in the US. Sorry for the dorky pictures, but I couldn’t wait to dig into the burger, while I was taking them 🙂
Mira this looks so good! And that lighting! I just wanna bask in it haha! Ohh, the caramelized onions — haven’t had any in months — thanks for the reminder! 🙂
Thanks Nicole! You make great sandwiches, too!
Bison meat is pretty hard to find around here, but I’ve heard it’s so good for you! I’m sure these burgers are awesome.
Thanks Joanne!
For the record, I’m a HUGE bison fan, especially when it’s ground. It tastes like beef but is so much healthier and works so well if you cook it right!
Which you have. This is a fantastic recipe. And the pics are great!
I agree, It is much healthier and tastes better than beef 🙂 Thanks for the nice comments, Mir 🙂
Oi oi oi!! This one really hits home, I LOVE burgers and I love love love the addition of blue cheese! I’ve never had a blue cheese burger – this will be The ONE!!
Thanks Nagi! I know you like burgers and I;m so happy to hear you like this one! Blue cheese makes a great topping! And I do love fries…
BISON MEAT makes me so so so happy 🙂
Have you ever had…. Ostrich or Kangaroo though?
No Kangaroo, but I’ve had ostrich 🙂
The sight of that melted cheese is making me so hungry! I haven’t eaten meat in over a month!!! (not my choice) ~ The Iron deficiency is definitely speaking up for itself. Look amazing.
Thanks Tash! I hope you get to eat some meat soon!
YUMMM! I love hamburgers! These look absolutely delicious. I love that you used Bison over regular beef. Can’t wait to give these a try!!
THANKS KELLEY!
Ever since a vacation in South Dakota over 6 years ago (where I met Ted Turner on his Bison ranch) my wife and I have used primarily ground bison in any recipe calling for ground beef. Particularly burgers (we LOVE burgers).
I do have a question about your recipe: “1 tbsp salt” Are you certain about that (assuming you meant Tablespoon)? That seems like a lot of salt to me.
Thanks Doc! You can add as much salt as you like, I usually add 1 tbsp for 4 burgers, which is 1/4 tbsp per burger and it is ok with me. I should probably put salt and pepper to taste, so it doesn’t seem confusing and doesn’t get too salty for other people.
