What exactly are Portobello mushrooms?

They are very close in texture and flavor to button mushroom, but also bigger. Portobellos are the exact same type of mushroom, just much larger in size.

They could be used in many recipes, often as a “burger” substitute.

How to make Portobello Mushrooms in the Air Fryer:

Can you cook whole Portobello mushrooms in the Air Fryer? Yes, and it is pretty easy to do so.

Making these in the air fryer is similar to baking in the oven, but the final result is more crispy and delicious.

Ingredients:

  • Portobello mushrooms – medium size, around 6 inches in diameter. Portobello mushrooms come on a variety of sizes. This recipe is perfect for mushrooms, that are 5-6 inches in diameter. For smaller mushrooms, you need to reduce the cooking time and of course increase it for larger ones.
  • Butter (optional)
  • Olive oil
  • Salt
  • Black Pepper
  • Garlic Powder, pressed garlic (or paste). I prefer using garlic powder, because the flavor is more balanced.
  • Thyme (optional), may use oregano, rosemary or basil
  • Chopped Parsley (optional, for garnishing)

Directions:

Prep the mushrooms

Either wash and par dry the mushrooms, of wipe with moist paper towel. Remove the stems (reserve for other recipes or discard). Using a spoon, scrape out the gills. You may leave the gills on, but to some people, they have a flavor, that is very intense and unpleasant.

Melt the butter and combine with the olive oil.

Using a brush, brush the mushrooms on both sides with the oil-butter mixture.

Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder and thyme (optional) on both sides.

Cook

Preheat Air Fryer to 350 F (180 C) for 5 minutes.

Cook for 10 minutes, starting with the stem side down and turning half way through.

Cooking time will vary, depending on the type and size of Air Fryer used and the size of the mushrooms.

Serve

Serve warm, right off the Air Fryer.

You may brush the cooked mushrooms with more butter, yogurt sauce, marinara sauce or top with grated cheese.

Pair with grilled meat or seafood.
