Cook: 30 minutes
Total: 40 minutes
Servings: 4

  • 1 cup red lentils picked through and rinsed
  • 4 cups water
  • 1/2 chopped onion
  • 2 cloves garlic
  • 4 tbsp tomato sauce
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • pinch of hot red pepper
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • dill for garnishing

  • In a large sauce pan combine lentils, water , tomato sauce onion and garlic. Bring to a boil over medium heat.
  • Cook lentils until they are tender and separated (15-20 minutes). Drain lentils if there is too much water left in the pan, but lentils appear cooked.
  • Add cumin, hot red pepper, paprika, black pepper, salt and lemon juice. Transfer to a food blender or processor and blend until smooth and well combined.
  • Check how it tastes and if you need to add more condiments. Let it cool down. Garnish with fresh dill and sesame seeds. Serve with pita chips or crackers.
