I can’t believe I haven’t shared this How To Grill Sweet Potato Fries Recipe with you yet.

We love sweet potatoes here in my house, but most of the time they are oven roasted or sometimes fried.

I always order them when we eat out, if the restaurant happens to have them.

My husband was insisting that we make sweet potato fries on the grill as a side dish for some steaks.

After some experimenting, I got a simple way to cook them, that requires no boiling the potatoes in advance, no marinating, you just peel and cut them, season and grill.

The most important part in this How To Grill Sweet Potato Fries Recipe actually is the method you use to grill them.

It called indirect heat cooking.

I decided to try this method, because it is so simple!

I also don’t like the idea of boiling the potatoes in advance, it makes them a little mushy and it gets hard to grill them later.

Plus it takes extra time to boil them and you have one more pot to wash.

Not good!!!

So I thought I’ll try everything possible to cook them exclusively on the grill.

The problem with this is that the outsides burn easily and the insides remain undercooked.

Sweet potatoes (if sliced) do require at least 20 minutes to cook on high temperature (oven or grill).

I decided to use a technique that I love for cooking meat – indirect heat grilling.

You do need a gas grill with at least two burners (I use this one) so one of the burners is set on medium/high heat and the other one is set on very low heat or even turned off.

You place the meat/vegetables on the side that the heat is low of off, so they slowly cook from the heat that comes of the side of the grill that is running on medium/high.

This barbecue method prevents burning and ensures slow and even cooking.

So How To Grill Sweet Potato Fries?

  • Preheat one side of a gas grill to medium/high heat (450F-500F). Turn the second burned (the other side of the gill) to low heat.
  • Wash and peel sweet potatoes.
  • Slice into thick fries (1/3 inch thick).
  • Season fries. I used (salt, pepper, garlic powder, paprika and cumin).
  • Drizzle with olive oil.
  • Place sweet potato fries on the side of the grill that is set on medium/high heat.
  • Grill for about 2 minutes per side, so the fries get nice dark grill marks.
  • Move fries to the other side of the grill (low heat).
  • Continue cooking for about 12 minutes, turning once. (Cooking time may vary. Grill marks may not look perfect as we move the fries from one side of the grill to another.)
  • Check potatoes periodically, to make sure they don’t overcook.
  • You can reduce the temperature if they appear to start browning.

I served these grilled sweet potato fries with an avocado yogurt dipping sauce.

How To Grill Sweet Potato Fries

How To Grill Sweet Potato Fries - perfectly cooked with dark grill marks on the outside, these sweet potato fries are made exclusively on the grill, no boiling requited. Great for an appetizer or a grilling party side dish.

Ingredients 

For The Grilled Sweet Potatoes:

  • 2 sweet potatoes, large
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin
  • 3/4 tsp paprika
  • 1/4 tsp Cayenne pepper, optional
  • 1/4 cup olive oil

For The Avocado Yogurt Dipping Sauce:

  • 1 avocado
  • 1/4 cup yogurt
  • 1 tbsp lime juice
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup cilantro
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/8 tsp Cayenne pepper
  • 1 garlic clove, pressed

Instructions 

For The Grilled Sweet Potatoes:

  • You need a gas grill with at least 2 burners. I have not tried this grilling technique on a charcoal grill.
    Preheat one of the burners to medium-high heat and the other one (next to it) to low heat, or just leave it off. 
  • Wash, peel and slice potatoes into 1/2-inch wide and 1/4 -inch thick fries.
    Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, cumin, paprika and Cayenne pepper. Drizzle with olive oil. Toss to combine.
  • Place fries on the grill, on the side preheated to medium-hjgh heat. Grill for 2 minutes per side. 
    Transfer potatoes to the side of the grill heated to low heat. Do not turn off the other side (the one preheated to high). 
    Grill potatoes on indirect heat for 6 minutes per side (12 minutes total), until cooked through. (Cooking time can vary, do not burn or leave under cooked).

For The Avocado Yogurt Dipping Sauce:

  • Combine all ingredients in a blender. Pulse a few times, until smooth. Add more water if the sauce appears too thick. Store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Notes

You need a gas grill with at least 2 burners. I have not tried this grilling technique on a charcoal grill. 
Cooking time may vary, depending on the temperature of the grill and thickness of the fries.
Optional: top with chopped cilantro and drizzle with lime juice.
